EDUCATION SUPPORT
The Newark Alliance provides support to organizations and projects that advance our education mission and develop Newark's youth. Initiatives being supported include the Westside High School Finance Academy, the Newark Arts Education Roundtable and the Newark Mentoring Coalition.

Westside High School Finance Academy

The Newark Alliance supports the Westside High School Academy of Finance, a small learning community that focuses on providing an academic program in finance and business. A cohort of approximately 50 students who start as freshmen will attend the Academy of Finance and be supported through graduation. This program engages students in project-based learning and career readiness courses with the goal of preparing them for jobs and/or college studies in the field.

As an Advisory Board Member and supporter of this initiative we assist with implementing the strategic goals which are to: learn from and implement best practices from existing National Academy Foundation Finance Academies; obtain the NAF certification; confirm the finance related curriculum; build a strong advisory board that allows teachers to bring adult connections to academic work (job shadowing opportunities, guest speakers, career day, internships, volunteer opportunities, career readiness, business etiquette, donation of resources, corporate sponsorships, field trips and college tours); and, to further an efficacy-based culture that holds high academic expectations and promotes personal development for all students.

Newark Arts Education Roundtable

The Newark Alliance is a member of the Newark Arts Education Roundtable, a consortium of approximately 40 organizations involved in supporting or providing arts education services to children in Newark during in-and-out-of- school time. Led by the Newark Arts Council with the Newark Public Schools as a key partner, the Roundtable collaborates with the schools to ensure that every student receives a comprehensive education in the arts. The impetus for this initiative is the proven data that indicates the positive impact of arts education on a kid's life-improving school retention rates and grades. The initiative's goal is to facilitate collaboration to ensure all children in grades PK through 12 have equitable access to a high quality arts education.

The Newark Arts in Education Roundtable consist of arts education stakeholders, including public, charter, and private schools; arts and cultural organizations; youth and community development entities; businesses; funders; and state and local government agencies.

Newark Mentoring Coalition

The Newark Mentoring Coalition helps Newark mentoring organizations build capacity to better serve Newark's youth. Rutgers University-Newark, through the Office of University Community Partnerships, is incubating the Newark Mentoring Coalition during its start-up years. As a member of the Board of Trustees, the Newark Alliance is committed to working with partners to explore opportunities to help close the "mentoring gap" in Newark. In developing capacity in local mentoring organizations, the Newark Mentoring Coalition's goals are to positively impact Newark's youth by increasing the number of mentor-mentee relationships. BACK
