Innovative solutions driving inclusive economic growth and community well-being
Newark Alliance’s Transformative Systems work develops innovative solutions to Newark’s most urgent economic challenges. We address the institutional barriers faced by Newark’s Black and Brown communities by harnessing the aggregated economic power and expertise of our Members to change their core economic and organizational practices by seeking out local talent and resources in areas such as hiring and procurement.
We foster our inclusive economic growth work by:
Serving as an intermediary to build bridges - between the community, industry, and government to deliver transformative initiatives for Newarkers;
Developing tailored urban planning strategies and interventions that address Newark’s unique needs and challenges;
Providing expert consulting to our Members on organizational practices that advance racial equity and inclusivity;
Convening roundtables comprised of diverse thought leaders and practitioners aligned around a shared vision for Newark’s economic revitalization;
Aligning and redirecting Members’ time, talent, and resources towards catalytic Newark-focused initiatives;
The Alliance’s signature initiative Hire. Buy. Live. Newark, provides a framework for our Transformative Systems work and is designed to bolster economic activity and create a sustainable ecosystem that benefits all Newarkers. The work grew out of Mayor Baraka’s Newark 2020 initiative.
Through Hire. Buy. Live. Newark, the Alliance fosters localized spending and meaningful employment contributing to an enriched quality of life for all Newarkers.
The Alliance’s Transformative Systems approach has resulted in the following:
Facilitated the submission of Newark’s comprehensive workforce development grant proposal to the USEDA in coordination with the City, Governor’s Office, the building trades, and Invest Newark.
Championed the development of a partnership between a healthcare organization, an urban agriculture cooperative, and others to revitalize a vacant retail site to provide healthy food and community health services.
Engaged nationally-recognized urbanists to create an investment playbook for Newark consisting of transformative project concepts from stakeholders across Newark that align with future federal funding opportunities.
